Distinguished experts, scholars, friends, ladies and gentlemen, Good morning!

We’re gathering here in the beautiful campus of Yunnan University to celebrate the opening of the international symposium“Myanmar in 2014: Reintegrating into the International Community”, which is co-organized by the Center for Myanmar Studies/ the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies of Yunnan University, the Charhar Institute, the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong and the Department of International Relations of Yangon University. On behalf of the Charhar Institute, I wish to appreciate the long-time efforts of Yunnan University and I would also warmly congratulate the opening of the symposium and sincerely welcome the participation of the experts from home and abroad.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, jointly initiated by China, Myanmar and India. Guided by the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, the traditional China-Myanmar“Pauk Phaw”friendship has been strengthening under the careful cultivation and maintenance of both countries’ leaders. Especially China and Myanmar established comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership on May 27th, 2011, marking a new stage for our bilateral relations. We cannot fail to see that in recent years, owing to various reasons, some difficulties have also occurred in the bilateral exchanges between our two sides, which both sides are working to solve. At this point, I wish to mention the conference in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence held recently in Beijing by leaders of China and Myanmar, when lead ers of the two countries have undertaken to push forward Sino-Myanmar relations to a new high, continuing to stick to the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

Ladies and gentlemen, China and Myanmar are close neighbors with that I have no doubt the relations between China and Myanmar enjoys a bright future with the real efforts of the two sides. China and Myanmar must establish solid interaction mechanism to improve mutual understanding of both sides. History has shown that, to promote a healthy and stable Sino-Myanmar relation is the interest of the two countries. And to deepen the relation, it not only needs the strong support of the government, but also relies very much on the involvement of the people, civil organizations, think tanks, business and academic circles and so on. In this regard, they should play their respective role and their part will of great help. For this, I should pay a special respect to Mr. U Ko Ko Hlaing, Chief Political Advisor to Myanmar President and the founder of Myanmar Development Resources Institute, and other Myanmar friends for their long efforts in their support for developing friendly relations and cooperation with China.

The Charhar Institute is happy to join in cosponsoring the symposium. As one of China’s most well-known non-official think tanks of diplomacy and international relations, it has been worked very hard to make itself to create an independent and well-known think tank with international influence, and to build platforms for exchange among official decisions, non-official ideas and mainstream media in helping the government as well as the general public with suggestions and advices and ideas. The Charhar Institute looks forward to carrying out extensive cooperation with all experts, scholars, think tanks and NGOs present here in diversified forms for our common purposes.

Finally, I wish the symposium a complete success!

Thank you!
