Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,Thank you very much. It’s my pleasure to be here to be among the group of the people who are generally interested in our country’s political and economic development. First of all, let me give my special thanks to Professor Li Chenyang, Deputy Director, Department of Social Sciences, Director, and Center for Myanmar Studies, Yunnan University.

Secondly, thanks for the warm welcome and general hospitality extended to us as well as for inviting us to participate in the symposium held in Kunming. I would also like to give my special thanks to the Charhar Institute and Hong Kong University for co-chairing the symposium. Since the opening up of Myanmar, seminars and symposiums focusing on Myanmar issues are frequently held both inside and outside Myanmar. Although I have participated in the seminars held by Myanmar Institute of Strategic Studies and international partners, however, this is the first time for department of International Relations of our university to take part in such kind of such international academic symposium. The international scholars who are participating in the symposium are all well known to us although we have not met with each other before. It cannot be denied that due to the changes in Myanmar we are here to share our views on today’s Myanmar, so at the symposium we would like to listen to your views and we would like to share with you our experience in Myanmar in 2014. I would like to take this opportunity to inform to my Chinese colleagues that China and Myanmar students exchange programme was established in our university and 12 outstanding students from my university went to study in Yunnan University. These are the positive steps for the China-Myanmar relations.

Changes and developments have taken place since March, 2011 when the new government initiated adopting and implementing the policy programs for the emergence of peaceful, modern and developed democratic nation. Since then the international community has changed the attitude to Myanmar as social political situation improved and as democracy and human rights are set in. It is also important to note that Myanmar is a wild flower in Asia. Forming a new civilian government means a more important step of political integration. Yet as you all know, issues of criminal violence and ethnic minorities both are now bringing challenges to our government. Trusts between government and various groups will be crucial to any sustainable peace in the country. And decades of the civil war and conflicts have shown to the leaders of the country and the people of Myanmar that political integration and lasting peace must be built on national reconciliation and economic development. We have lots of challenges in promoting democracy in terms of politics and economy, but believing that the government has confidence to overcome those challenges with friends like China, ASEAN and other countries around the world. In this context, we hope to find ways, solutions and contributions for the future development of our country by cooperating with international partners on this symposium. I would also like to thank the prominent scholars and professors who specialize in Myanmar studies.

It is also important to note that Myanmar-China relations in national development become very important in our democratization reforms. In this context I do hope that China, a traditional friend of Myanmar, as well as our neighbor, will provide a very pragmatic support to Myanmar’s integration into international community in 2014.

Thank you!
